GIS 4048 - Module 3 Assignment: Geoprocessing

For this module we used two different ways to perform geoprocessing analysis. The two tasks we were asked to complete were to create a model using model builder and to write a python script. 

The first method we did on this exercise was the model builder in ArcGIS. With this tool we started off using the soils and basin files to clip them together for the start of the model. Next, the select tool was used to separate what soils were compatible for farmland and what soils were not. The last tool, erase, was used to take away the noncompatible soils from the out to give us a map of compatible soils for farming. The overall purpose of designing this model was to display a final map of soils that were prime for farmland.



For the second part of the assignment, we are to write a script that creates a map of hospitals that are located in a 1000-meter radius that do not overlap. We are sure the XY coordinates do no overlap because we use the dissolve tool to prevent this from happening when we run the script in ArcGIS. I would say this was the most complicated part of the assignment for me as I difficulty with the buffer and dissolve tool. I tried many times and could not figure out how to solve the error that came back in my code.

In this week's lesson we covered topics about Land Partitioning Systems, Cartographic Designs, and Perceptual Organization principles. We learned about historical and current methods for land demarcation and systems used to divide land. Next, we learned about Perceptual Organization, and Cartographic Design using Gestalt's Principles: visual hierarchy, contrast, figure-ground, and visual balance.  The deliverable(s) of the action plan required by students is to create a map in ArcGIS Pro of Public Schools in Ward 7, Washington D.C. GIS 5100: M4 Lab: Coastal Flooding

For this week in Module 4 we take a look at coastal flooding and erosion for Mantoloking, New Jersey and Collier, Florida.  For Mantoloking, New Jersey we take a look at elevation changes post Hurricane Sandy. Using DEM and LiDAR we compare pre and post storm data to evaluate where and how much erosion has occurred along this New Jersey shoreline.  After moving on from the section above, this assignment was by far the toughest GIS assignment yet in the GIS journey. There were many tools and trick I have not yet worked with or had experience with making this a challenging assignment. I tried my best to accomplish this assignment but with my new GIS background I unfortunately cannot fully explain what our end goal should have been. What I can explain is we should have seen flooding areas and destroyed building through DEMs and LiDAR data.

GIS 5007 - Computer Cartography: Module 6: Isarithmic Mapping

In this week's lesson we covered topics about flow maps, and isarithmic mapping. To show our understanding and expertise of this topic we are to create a map depicted with continuous tones, hypsometric tints, hill shade effect(s), and contours. Students are with data to create an isarithmic map of precipitation data for Washington State during the time frame of 1981 - 2010. The data used for this project was prepared using the PRISM interpolation method  from the PRISM Group at Oregon State University.  First, I created a map using continuous tones to show the average rainfall data, without contours and hillshade effect. We can see the smooth, continuous flow of change for the data.
