GIS 5100 - M2 Lab: LiDAR

This week our assignment was focused on LiDAR (light detection) and ranging. The data used for this assignment was intended to help us understand the forest canopy and terrain of our example. Our main objectives were to determine the height and density of the canopy and terrain in the Shenandoah National Park. 

Over the course of this assignment, I enjoyed learning new techniques with LiDAR and ranging. There were some learning curves to overcome with working with such a large dataset. One of them was being patient with working with such a large dataset resulting in the system working VERY slowly. This assignment was a great reminder to frequently save your work during your progress as a preventative of a system crash. Also, it has been some time since I made any type of layout so that was a great refresher. Overall, this has been one of my favorite GIS assignments so far.

In this week's lesson we covered topics about Land Partitioning Systems, Cartographic Designs, and Perceptual Organization principles. We learned about historical and current methods for land demarcation and systems used to divide land. Next, we learned about Perceptual Organization, and Cartographic Design using Gestalt's Principles: visual hierarchy, contrast, figure-ground, and visual balance.  The deliverable(s) of the action plan required by students is to create a map in ArcGIS Pro of Public Schools in Ward 7, Washington D.C. The map we create must display our expertise in Land Partitioning Systems, Perceptual Organization, and all four of Gestalt's Principles.  Steps for creating my map: I used the "clip" tool to create a new layer "Ward7_Schools" on the map for all schools only in Ward7. GIS 5100: M4 Lab: Coastal Flooding

For this week in Module 4 we take a look at coastal flooding and erosion for Mantoloking, New Jersey and Collier, Florida.  For Mantoloking, New Jersey we take a look at elevation changes post Hurricane Sandy. Using DEM and LiDAR we compare pre and post storm data to evaluate where and how much erosion has occurred along this New Jersey shoreline.  After moving on from the section above, this assignment was by far the toughest GIS assignment yet in the GIS journey. There were many tools and trick I have not yet worked with or had experience with making this a challenging assignment. I tried my best to accomplish this assignment but with my new GIS background I unfortunately cannot fully explain what our end goal should have been. What I can explain is we should have seen flooding areas and destroyed building through DEMs and LiDAR data.

GIS 5007 - Computer Cartography: Module 6: Isarithmic Mapping

In this week's lesson we covered topics about flow maps, and isarithmic mapping. To show our understanding and expertise of this topic we are to create a map depicted with continuous tones, hypsometric tints, hill shade effect(s), and contours. Students are with data to create an isarithmic map of precipitation data for Washington State during the time frame of 1981 - 2010. The data used for this project was prepared using the PRISM interpolation method  from the PRISM Group at Oregon State University.  First, I created a map using continuous tones to show the average rainfall data, without contours and hillshade effect. We can see the smooth, continuous flow of change for the data. Continuous Tones Next, I used the same data to create a hypsometric map, with the hillshade effect, to display the same average precipitation data.
